A Fun Spin on Wainscoting {Just had to share!}

Hey guys!  I was doing my morning blog reading this morning and came across Kate’s BOTB (Best of the Blogosphere) post.  The very first find that was featured caught my eye!

Check out that neat wainscoting!!  I clicked on the link to find out more!

Turns out, this photo comes from Tracey @ Soul Style.  She actually used a company called Acurio Latticeworks for that gorgeous wainscoting.  She worked with one of their people and sent them what she had in mind for her design.  They came up with a design, she approved, and they did all the dirty work!  It showed up at her door already cut and all she had to do was place it on her wall!

How cool is that!?!  And the best part is, this option was way cheaper than what she had priced out in MDF!  Score!

She also had them cut more in a different pattern for window casings.  Check it out:

How fun is that?

I love this unique spin on wainscoting so much I just had to share!  Now my wheels are spinning!  I want some!!  Hehe.

What do you think?  Do you like this fun spin on wainscoting or do you like the more traditional look?

Thanks for stopping by!

Mirror Makeover

Hey guys!  We have been kind of “blah” around our house lately.  I haven’t been feeling well and I don’t think Emily has either.  She’s teething and has a runny nose so her naps have been wacky.  Which of course makes us all wacky!!

But I did want to take a few minutes to share with you guys a little somethin’ somethin’ I’ve been working on.

Scott’s parents sold their home in NY.  There was a ton of antique, really nice furniture in that home and his parents were generous to give some of the pieces to us.  More on that in another post.

Anyway, one of the pieces that his parents sent down to us was this gigantic vintage mirror!  It was gorgeous!

IMG_6132

Please don’t look at my disgusting thunder thighs!  Just look at the mirror, mmmkay?

The only problem with this mirror was the color.  It’s such a gorgeous piece but the gold color just wouldn’t go with anything in our home.

IMG_6133

So I decided to paint it!

I went to Hobby Lobby looking for just the right product for this job and I think I found it!

IMG_6134

This stuff was awesome and worked great.

I didn’t even tape the mirror off.  I just got busy painting using small brushes!

And here’s how she turned out:

IMG_6147

IMG_6148

Of course since I didn’t tape off the mirror or cover it with paper, there were some smudges on the mirror, but they came off easily with a smaller brush.  I could have also used a Q-Tip or something like that.  It came right off.

I decided to put her above our mantle in the playroom.  I figure I can hang a wreath or mossy monogram from it or something like that.  It’ll be super fun to decorate for Halloween as well!

IMG_6177

IMG_6179 IMG_6180

The mirror looks like it’s just leaning against the wall, but it’s actually up there with a hook as well.  That way if something weird were to happen that would possibly tip the mirror over, it will get caught on the hook by the wire that runs across the back of it.  Safety first, people!

What do you think?  Do you like the silver or the gold color better?

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great Thursday!!

Sssshhhh…..The Baby’s Sleeping!

It was inevitable in our house.  I’d just get the baby to sleep for her nap and not any sooner than I could get down the stairs, someone would knock on the door or ring the door bell (usually the FedEx guy).  The dogs would go crazy barking and about 10 seconds later, Emily would start crying.

Disaster!

What was my solution?

IMG_6175

A super classy hot pink post-it note placed over the doorbell.

I’ve had this on my doorbell for MONTHS now!

I hated that the note was so……blah.  I mean, it was on a hot pink post-it for cryin’ out loud.  Not cute.  Not to mention, the post-it would fade because of the sun and I’d have to write up another not-so-cute post-it to place over the door bell.

Well, I finally got tired of that whole scene and decided to make something a little more…..cute.  And a little more permanent.  Something that I could use for a while and that *hopefully won’t fade from the sun.

IMG_6142

I think it turned out pretty darn cute!

Supplies:

- Plain wood rectangle (Hobby Lobby, 99 cents) or scrap piece of wood

- Krylon spray paint of your choice

- FolkArt antiquing medium

- Silhouette & vinyl or scrapbook letters

- Ribbon or wire or rope to hang your sign with

I started with a plain piece of thin wood board that I bought at Hobby Lobby for 99 cents.

IMG_6146

Of course, if you have scrap wood or MDF laying around, that would work as well.

I also bought this antiquing glaze because I knew I wanted to give it some dimension and texture with that “distressed”/antique look.

IMG_6135

I took my board outside and drilled 2 small holes on either side for the ribbon to go through.  In hindsight, I wish I would’ve used a larger drill bit because it was kind of hard to get the ribbon to go through those holes.  Then, I sprayed it with a few coats of Krylon’s Bahama Sea {LOOOOVE this color} in gloss.  After the spray paint had completely dried, I brought my board inside and rubbed some of the antiquing glaze on top with a paper towel.  I wiped it off in circular motion right after.  {Sorry I don’t have any pics of these steps.  They’re pretty self-explanatory.}

I then made the text for my words in Silhouette Studio.  If you don’t have a Silhouette, scrapbook stickers would do the trick too.  Here’s after “weeding” my vinyl and getting it ready for placement:

IMG_6138

Don’t ask me why it didn’t cut out the word “sleeping” but it didn’t.  No clue why.  I had to go back afterwards and cut that word separately.

I used some contact paper to transfer my vinyl onto the wood board.  I then added my piece of ribbon and knotted it off!

And here she is:

So, what do you think?  Mamas, do you have a way you keep the FedEx man from waking your baby up?  I’d love to hear it!

Happy Friday

Hi friends!

Happy Friday!

I’m not gonna lie…..I’m kind of excited to see this week come to an end.  It has been a crazy week for me!

We have a studio apartment type room above our garage {we call them carriage houses ‘round here}.  We ended up renting it out, which meant I had to get all my crap treasures out of there!  We got back from Chicago on Sunday and the movers came on Monday {yes, there was so much stuff that we had to hire movers}.  I’ve been up there cleaning and getting it ready for our tenant to move in on Saturday.

Also, Scott’s birthday is coming up on Wednesday and I’ve been working on his gift.  I am soooooo excited about his gift!  I can’t wait to share with you guys!  It’s a really special gift that I hope he loves!

Also, my Crockpot Lemon Herb Chicken recipe is being featured on Madigan Made today!!  Say whaaaa??  I was so excited when I clicked over to Madigan’s blog this morning and saw my recipe!  I absolutely love Madigan and her blog!  If you haven’t checked it out yet, I strongly suggest you head on over and give it a looksie!  You won’t be disappointed.  Promise!

And I have to mention that the past few mornings have been GLORIOUS here in North Florida!  Oh my word!  These cool mornings have me so excited for Fall!  I literally cannot wait!!!!  I just can’t wait for pumpkin patches, soups & stews, Halloween {it’ll be Emily’s first}, Emily’s birthday, Gator Football, and that cool air!  I can’t wait to wear outfits like this:

And have this on my front porch:

That’s all I got for today!  Have a great weekend!

Magazine Madness

We love a good magazine around here.  Currently I subscribe to Better Homes & Gardens, Southern Living, and Country Living.  On top of those, I also receive catalogs from Serena & Lily, Pottery Barn, PB Kids, West Elm, Ballard Designs, One Step Ahead, and I’m sure there are a couple others I am forgetting.  I also always pick up the BHG special magazines like the Storage & Organization ones.  Not to mention, Scott subscribes to a couple project management magazines and a couple different golf magazines.  Needless to say, we have a TON of mags around this joint!

I used to keep all of our magazines in a large basket on the bottom of our console table.  That is, until the basket got completely full.  So I went through and tossed the magazines I no longer wanted and kept the ones I wanted to use for reference.  I was still left with a lot of magazines.

So on a recent trip to Orlando, I was able to pay a visit to the wonderful world of IKEA.  I picked up some magazine holders for pennies while I was there.  They were just the cheapo, white, cardboard ones.  I didn’t need anything fancy.

I was so excited to get home and organize my magazines!

We have a couple bookshelves in our dining room/playroom area.  I decided this would be the best place for my new magazine files.  I put these bad boys together in about 5 minutes flat.  I whipped up some labels in Word and was left with this…..

{I’m still in the process of “decorating” this bookshelf.}

Chevron + fun font = love!!

I am super happy with how it turned out and now it’s so easy for me to go and file my magazines away when I am done reading them!  Gotta love a quick & simple organizing project!

Whatcha think?  How do you store/organize your magazines?
